PSP Modding

For the Sony PSP owners who may not be aware of the capabilities of their remarkable handheld entertainment system, there is the potential to unlock the system and customize it to your exacting tastes. At the moment, this ability is attainable only for systems that are running firmware version 2.0 or below on their devices.

This is how to find out what revision level is on your system:
- Go to the dashboard and press the left button until you scroll to the Settings icon
- Press the down button four times to System Settings, Press X
- Press the Down button 5 times to System Information, the press the X button again

If your System Software Version is 2.0 or below, you are in luck! For those of you who have System Software 2.1, 2.5 or the latest 2.6; even though you cannot exploit the PSP at this time, there is hope. Communities that research and develop codes to customize similar systems are always working to bring you the ability to customize.

There is a wealth of homebrew software available that can run on an exploited PSP, including games, utilities, browsers for photos and the web and video playbacks of files in many different file formats. To learn more about what applications there are, check out this site.

One popular application is the ability to create and play from backups of Sony PSP titles. A significant portion of the games available today can be backed up, freeing you of the necessity of carrying around the UMD's and running the risk of loss or damage. Backups are stored and run off of the Memory Sticks installed on the PSP system. Most game backups are under 1 gigabyte in size, however, there are several backups that exceed that. Some of these games include FIFA 2006 and GTA Liberty City Stories. Fortunately there are now 2Gig Memory Sticks available at a moderate price.

If you are interested in exploiting your PSP and it meets the software version criteria, I can perform the necessary modifications and show you how to use the new capabilities. You can reach me at bigsnafu@gmail.com.
